Bremont Spitfire Tribute
Wanaka: A life-long family passion for classic Warbird aircraft has led the UK-based founders of luxury watch company Bremont to sponsor one of the premier displays at next Easter’s Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow.
Nick and Giles English founded Bremont in 2002. Seven years earlier the crash of a Harvard aircraft during practice for an air display, claimed the life of their ex-RAF pilot father Euan and badly injured Nick.
Giles was in another aircraft on the ground waiting to take off when he was told his father had been killed and his brother had broken over 30 bones and probably wouldn’t make it.
Remarkably Nick recovered after months in intensive care and he and Giles have continued their passion for classic aircraft and for making precise, reliable and durable watches.
Bremont will be sponsoring the Spitfire display at the Warbirds Over Wanaka Airshow.
Nick English says they’re thrilled to be associated with the Southern Hemisphere’s premier Warbirds Airshow and to be sponsoring such an iconic aircraft as the Spitfire; “Our dad flew the Spitfire during WWII and this association is just another way of honouring him and all the other wonderful pilots who flew these magnificent machines.”
“Dad had a PhD in aeronautical engineering and loved beautiful machinery. He would bring home old clocks from auctions and get Giles and I to try to get them going again. That’s where it all started for us.”
Steeped in aviation heritage, the brand name even bears further aviation links. In the late 1990s Nick and Giles were flying across France in their 1930s biplane. The weather was closing in and a rough-running engine forced them to make an emergency landing.
Keen to avoid the French authorities, the brothers were more than happy to accept the help of the farmer whose field they had landed in. They stayed in his home while the aircraft took cover in the barn.
It transpired that the farmer had flown aircraft during WWII and was also a gifted engineer. His workshop contained many half-restored wall clocks. The brothers promised that his warm hospitality would not be forgotten. His name was Antoine Bremont.
Bremont is an award-winning British luxury watch brand, manufacturing mechanical watches in Henley-on-Thames, England. Bremont is making considerable investment with its UK watch making and manufacturing and at the end of 2014 launched a new facility in Silverstone to manufacture case and movement components. Co-founded by brothers Nick & Giles English in 2002, Bremont has made a substantial impact on the watch industry in a very short period of time. The brand remains true to its original principles of: aviation and military, British engineering and adventure.
As well as manufacturing watches for some of the most exclusive military squadrons around the world, Bremont continues to play an influential role in revitalising the British watch industry, the birthplace of numerous timekeeping innovations still used today. The brand is now in the top handful of chronometer producers in the world.
