Lakeside Event 2018
In the space of just a couple of airshows the Friday afternoon Warbirds Over Wanaka lakeside event has established itself as an integral part of the biennial aviation extravaganza.
The first lakeside event was held in 2014 featuring six WWI involved in a dogfight over the stunning Lake Wanaka.
In 2016 the feature aircraft over the lake was the mighty Catalina Flying Boat which came in low over the crowd for a perfect touch down on the lake. The scene was made all the more perfect by the glorious weather enjoyed by the huge crowd which had gathered on the lakefront for this free community event.
Planning is already underway for the 2018 lakeside event and this time the feature aircraft will be helicopters. Warbirds Over Wanaka founder Sir Tim Wallis was one of the early pioneers of live deer recovery in New Zealand and helicopters played an integral role in the success of that business.
Helicopters have always featured at the airshow and in 2018 those at the lakeside event on the Friday afternoon will get to see them and check out their capabilities over the lake. Of course if the Catalina is at the airshow then we’re sure we’ll be hard-pressed to keep her away from the lakeside event.
