Raptors Are Go

One of the world’s most impressive fighter aircraft has been confirmed for a first-ever visit to New Zealand for Warbirds Over Wanaka this Easter.

The USAF F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team will be performing on all three days of New Zealand’s Premier Airshow.

Only 183 Raptors have been built since they first entered service in 2005.  At a cost of more than $NZ200 million each the Raptor is the only US-built fighter not sold to other countries.

The 5th Generation fighter is considered by many to be the best fighter aircraft in the world.  It has some of the best stealth abilities of any other comparable fighters and it’s engines produce more thrust than any other fighter.  Another feature of the Raptor is its ability to achieve Supercruise, being able to go Supersonic without using its afterburners.

The Raptor will be flown at Wanaka by Captain Nick “Laz” Le Tourneau – Commander and pilot for the F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team stationed at the Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.

Warbirds Over Wanaka General Manager says having the Raptor Demo Team come to New Zealand is a real coup.

“This team displays at all the major airshows in the US and at big military airshows around the world.  To have them come here says a lot about how well regarded the Wanaka show is globally.  This is right up there with the biggest acts we’ve ever secured in the 38 years of our event,” says Ed.

Two Raptors will make the trip to New Zealand and will operate out of Christchurch International Airport.  Ed says the team at Christchurch has been instrumental in helping secure the F-22s.

“This is a very special aircraft and Christchurch Airport has gone beyond in making sure the Demo Team requirements can all be met.  We couldn’t have done it without them,” says Ed.

Warbirds Over Wanaka is being held at Easter (April 3, 4 and 5).  Tickets are selling fast through Ticketek.
